Trading Telegram groups: how to find, verify and use one
If you trade gold or FX, you have almost certainly been invited to a trading Telegram group — a channel promising entries, stop losses and targets straight to your phone. Some are run by people who genuinely trade, many are noise, and a few exist only to funnel you to a broker paying the owner a commission on your volume. Here is how these groups make money, how to check one before you pay, and what to ask first.
Disclosure: we run a paid service that relays the Fredtrading VIP channel into private Telegram messages. Run the checklist below on us too.
Why traders moved to Telegram
Signals used to live on forums and members-only websites. Telegram won because it fits how a signal is consumed: a push notification on the device already in your hand, no login, no dashboard. On a fast instrument that matters — an XAUUSD entry zone can be valid for minutes, and read twenty minutes late it is no longer the trade that was published.
The same convenience makes abuse easy. Anyone can spin up a channel in seconds, use any name and avatar, edit or delete messages after the fact, and pad the subscriber count. Nothing is verified, so every check has to come from outside the app.
Types of trading Telegram groups: free, paid, broker-sponsored and copy-trade
Free public channels
Open to anyone and usually a funnel: the signals are real often enough to build trust, but the money is made elsewhere — a paid tier, a course, a broker link. Good for sampling a style, rarely the product.
Paid subscription channels
You pay a monthly fee for the signals. The money comes from you, which is the cleanest incentive available: if it stops being worth it, you cancel and they lose income.
Broker-sponsored channels
Free provided you open an account with a named broker and deposit; the owner is usually an affiliate earning a rebate on your volume. This can be legitimate and openly disclosed — Frederik Frost's own site, fred-frost.com, offers free copy trading on this model. Just note that "free" means paying through spread and moving your account there.
Copy-trading rooms
Trades are mirrored into your account automatically. Less work, less control: you cannot skip a setup you dislike, sizing follows someone else's rule, and you are tied to a supported broker.
How to find a legitimate trading Telegram group
Start with the person or brand, not the channel. Anyone worth following has a footprint outside Telegram that predates the invite. Fredtrading has a Trustpilot profile with over 2,600 reviews and a main channel with more than 35,000 subscribers — that makes nobody profitable, but it is a record you can check rather than a claim to take on faith.
- Search the brand with "Trustpilot" and "scam", and read the negative reviews first — they show how problems get handled.
- Take the channel link from the official website — never a comment section, DM or screenshot.
- Check the exact @handle: impostors copy the name, avatar and pinned message and change one character.
- Ignore unsolicited invitations. Nobody legitimate cold-DMs you into a trading Telegram group.
- Establish whether this is the original channel or a relay — and if a relay, whether it says so.
How to verify a trading Telegram group before you pay
Scroll back through the history. Do losing trades appear alongside winners? Are entries posted before the move, or only as a screenshot afterwards? Do messages carry an "edited" marker at convenient moments? Then forward-test: log every signal for two to four weeks against your own broker's feed, with no money on the line. Two details matter on gold.
- Quotes differ between brokers. XAUUSD pricing, spreads and swap vary from one broker to the next, so a fill claimed in a channel may never have been available on your platform.
- "Pips" on gold are ambiguous. With most brokers one standard lot of XAUUSD is 100 ounces, so a one-dollar move is 100 dollars per lot. Some channels call $0.10 a pip, others $0.01 — the same trade is sold as "+50" or "+500". Convert every claim into dollars per lot.
Verification tells you how a service operates, not that it will be profitable: due diligence does not remove market risk, and past results never guarantee future ones.
Public channel vs private DM delivery — why it matters
Most services drop everything into one large public channel, which carries three costs. Busy channels get muted, and a muted channel is one you read late. Membership is visible, and scraped member lists feed the DMs offering account management. And the levels sit buried between promotions and banter.
Private one-to-one delivery fixes the mechanics, not the strategy: nothing competes with the message, no member list, no group to mute. That is what our relay does — Fredtrading VIP setups, entry, stop loss and targets intact.
Free vs paid: what you actually get for money
There is no free signal channel, only one where somebody else pays — usually a broker paying for your volume. Whoever feeds you trade ideas then earns more when you trade more, whether or not the trades work. A subscription inverts that. A fair paid group gives you the full setup rather than a teaser, follow-ups when a trade is moved or invalidated, one price, and cancellation you can perform yourself. Ours is 15 USD a month with a 3-day free trial.
What no price buys is a promise about returns. Signals remove the search for setups, not the risk — you still place every trade and carry every loss.
Red flags and common scams
- Guaranteed profits, "risk-free" trades, or a fixed daily percentage — the clearest disqualifier there is.
- Anyone offering to trade your account, or asking for funds outside a regulated broker or payment processor.
- Access conditional on depositing with one named broker through a tracking link.
- Profit screenshots with no losses, no ticket numbers, or a visible demo tag.
- Payment by crypto to a personal wallet or by gift card: no invoice, no chargeback.
- Signals published without a stop loss, or "results" posted after the candle closed.
- Questions deleted and the member asking them banned.
- Channels impersonating a known trader — check the handle against the official site.
Questions to ask an admin before subscribing
- Who produces the signals, and do they trade the same setups?
- Do you receive commission, rebate or referral payments from a broker?
- Is this the original channel or a relay, and if a relay, is it authorised?
- Does every signal include entry, stop loss and targets, posted before the entry is valid?
- Are losing trades posted in the same channel as winners?
- How many signals per week, in which sessions?
- How do I cancel, and does access run to the end of the paid period?
- Is this general market information or personal investment advice?
The honest answer to the last one is general information; anything tailored to your circumstances is regulated advice. Clear answers guarantee nothing, but evasion is an answer in itself.
Frequently asked questions
Are trading Telegram groups legal?
Publishing general market commentary and trade ideas is legal in most jurisdictions, while personal investment advice and managing other people's money are regulated activities. That is why credible channels state their signals are general information. Rules vary by country, so check what applies locally.
How much should a trading Telegram group cost?
There is no standard, and price is not a proxy for quality. Monthly fees in the tens of dollars are common; four-figure "mentorships" and "lifetime access" deals deserve more scrutiny, since a lifetime fee removes any reason to keep performing. Ours is 15 USD a month with a 3-day free trial.
Can I test a trading Telegram group without risking money?
Yes, and you should. Log every signal for two to four weeks on a demo account or in a spreadsheet, priced off your own broker's feed and risk per trade. Judge the sample as a whole, and remember a good test period is no prediction of the next one.
Why is XAUUSD (gold) so common in signal channels?
Gold is liquid, trades nearly around the clock on weekdays, and moves enough intraday — particularly around US data releases and the London-New York overlap — to offer frequent setups on one instrument. That same volatility widens spreads and produces sharp reversals, so sizing on XAUUSD matters more, not less.
